Autobiography graphic organizer 2nd grade

These biography reading passages and comprehension activities include resources for students to learn about famous Americans. These biographies of famous people are specifically written for kids to learn the life story of influential people, including presidents, leaders, inventors, women, civil rights activists, and more. One of the challenges of teaching elementary grades is finding engaging nonfiction reading passages that students can actually read, comprehend, and use for writing expository text.

By reading these biographies, second-grade and third-grade students learn about the famous person through a fun, easy-to-read passage. Students can also use the QR Codes for additional biography research.

Included are comprehension activities that support sequence of events and categorizing facts, as well as a simple biography report. Each biography resource includes the following components. The layout and application of the components are the same across all biographies so that you can give students one set of instructions, even if students are researching different famous people. The three-part vocabulary cards can be used in several different ways.

You have the option of cutting apart all three parts and having students match word, picture, and definition, or leaving the word and picture together and having students match them with the correct definition.

Students can also use the picture cards in a report display or you can use them on a biography word wall. Each biography resource includes a poster with an image of the famous person and information about why the person is important.

The posters come in color and black and white. You can give students the black and white posters to color and use in their reports. The biographies come in two formats like my animal articles. The one-page format is great for black and white printing. It has more condensed text and less images. The two-page format includes color photos, larger text, and more line spacing. This format is great for whole group instruction and close reading activities. All of the biography text is written in a similar format.

Those sections are consistent across all biographies and help students to organize the information on the note-taking graphic organizer or the report pages in the Biography Report for ANY Person. These famous people graphic organizers are designed to help your students develop their research skills.

Helping students learn how to research and record answers is a skill that can be difficult. It can be overwhelming for students to narrow down search results and find accurate and meaningful information when they practice searching.

We feel that providing students with practice with the skill of researching is meaningful practice. For students who might be overwhelmed by searching for the answers, it might be a good idea to help them as they begin. You can guide students who need a little more help to a specific site where they can find the needed information.

Each of the 8 organizers has a different focus, but is presented in the same format. These will give students a foundation for their knowledge of the person they are learning about. For each topic, we have created a two page graphic organizer for students to record the important facts they find.

For the picture spot, you might have students draw a picture or print one they find when researching. It might simply be a starting point, or could be an outline from which the students write a biography. As with all of our resources, The Curriculum Corner creates these for free classroom use. Our products may not be sold. You may print and copy for your personal classroom use.

To generate the greatest interest among your students, make sure your assortment includes biographical books about people who have made notable contributions in the following categories: athletics, business, literature and the arts, public service, science, and exploration.

Up until this point, students may only have limited exposure with a few well known figures so a wide variety of books can really spark an interest in this genre. Tip: I separate these books into baskets labeled with each category so students can quickly find books that meet their interests.

Make a class set of the Research Notebook from the Biography Writing With Patricia and Frederick McKissack activity or another graphic organizer for students to use to record research questions and sources.

Part I: Introducing the Genre Step 1: Introduce the biography genre by telling your students that biographies are the one genre that can open their eyes and hearts to people who have made a difference in the world. They can learn about lives and eras of both the past and present. Read the following to your students to pique interest:. Ingenuity, creativity and curiosity: These traits define the world's greatest inventors.

This person, one of history's most productive inventors, possessed all three qualities in great quantities. Some of his better known inventions include the odometer, bifocals and a more convenient way to heat homes. He also was responsible for the very first lending library, the first volunteer fire department and daylight savings time. Step 2: Ask students if they can guess who this great American was. The answer, of course, is Benjamin Franklin, but most students do not know him as a prolific inventor.

If you'd like, you may choose to read more about Benjamin Franklin from any biographical resource you may have. Ask questions along the way to stimulate students' thinking. Step 3: Tell students they have the opportunity to learn many interesting facts they do not know about people when they explore biographies.

Discuss with students any notable people they may already know a great deal of information about, and who they may like to learn more about. Generate a list of possible names or categories of people on the board or a piece of chart paper.

Step 4: Allow students to explore your collection of biographies. I prefer to do this by setting up centers with baskets of biographies that are labeled. Allow at least 30 minutes for students to browse through the many biographies you have provided. Step 5: I normally wait approximately three days before moving onto Part II. During this interim, time is provided for students to read the biography collection daily. By the time I move into Part II, most students have found a person of interest and they are eager to begin learning more. Here you will find, what I think, are high-quality, free graphic organizers that are immediately ready to print and distribute.

I dug into my own archives that I've accumulated over my 33 year career in search of organizers that focus on writing. Although I found quite a few, I felt that my collection could be more complete. With that in mind, I searched thoroughly for graphic organizer ideas wherever I could find them. Although many of the organizers I found were specifically for reading, I adapted and redesigned them to better suit teachers of writing. The result is what you will see on this page--a collection of 50 graphic organizers designed specifically for teaching writing.

You may use the following quick links to go directly to what interests you on this page. You may also scroll down the page manually if you choose to do so. The following graphic organizers are designed to focus kids' attention on what to write and how to present it. Although the screenshots you will see here have been reduced in size and in clarity, I think you'll be able to see the main headers, subheaders, and the overall design fairly well.

All of the charts in this section are designed to be suitable for any writing project that requires sequencing--steps in a process, events in chronological order, and chains of cause and effect relationships. The first two of the following maps are designed specifically for persuasive essays. Although the third is labeled as an expository map, it could just as easily be used for persuasion. I have included a box to the right of each wheel for students to make additional notes or to follow your specific instructions for completion.

Although these graphic organizers are designed specifically for journalism students, they would also be appropriate for other types of expository writing. Here are just a few organizers for poetry. These writing webs didn't seem to fit clearly into any of the above categories, so I have included them here.

These organizers are customizable--you may type in the headers, subheaders, directions, and instructional material that best suit your needs. I've included these because sometimes predesigned forms are not entirely appropriate for the task at hand. This way, if you have a particular book title or a particular main topic that you want to appear in the organizer, you can go right ahead and type it in.

Each customizable organizer displays areas shaded in blue--these are the areas that you may type what you wish. Additionally, when the mouse pointer passes each of these shaded areas, a tool tip will pop up briefly as you see in the yellow box here:.

Teach Students to Write Biography Reports

Here are the 17 customizable graphic organizers. The original completed organizer appears on the left side of each slide, and its customizable version appears on the right. If these graphic organizers are fairly well received, I would be happy to design more of them in the near future. Let me know what you think. The following 10 graphic organizers for teaching writing reduced in size here to fit the slideshow are available for immediate download. You may download them completely free of charge here.

I would imagine that most of the graphic organizers presented on this page would be suitable for any grade level. I deliberately left out the graphic images on some of the customizable organizers simply because I don't know what grade level you teach.

Although earlier versions of Adobe's PDF software included a provision for end users to import and add their own graphics, the most recent version does not. I am acutely aware of the fact that many more types of graphic organizers for teaching writing could be designed and created. Tell me what you need. The "lights" in their eyes just seem to burn more brightly. Best wishes to you and your kids. And, let the lights shine on.

Biographies of Famous People for Elementary Students

Leave me a comment in the box below. Our biography unit is one of my favorite units in our classroom! This is the first time students experience an independent report, use technology, and have to synthesize information from various sources.

That can be a difficult task for second graders! How have I helped my second graders be successful when researching a person? It takes a lot of modeling and scaffolding. I use MLK as my biographical hero and we read several books about him. I read all kinds of books, even books that students will use in their research.

Studying an individual person is such a new concept for most students that we need to set the stage for why the person is important or why we study important people. Along with reading the texts, we also create an ongoing anchor chart where we add the person, date, and why the person did what he did that was important. The chart looks a little different each year but generally includes the above information.

Most biography text is so dense and difficult for even adults to read! Over the years, I have gathered a ton of resources to make this information gathering process easier.

The books above I purchased from eBay. This is a similar listing. I have also scoured TpT for text on biographical people. This Reading Comprehension Bundle has been a good resource. The text is a little high for my students, but still accessible for most of them. We only use the text in it, though, not the questions. I basically pull grade-level text from as many sources as I can to give students multiple resources and exposure to the information from multiple points.

Each packet above has pieces of texts for students to use. On a small piece of paper, I have students list three or four people that they would like to study. If I have done a good enough job setting the stage, they will have heard of several biographical heroes and will be able to write down more than a just the presidents!

Several factors go into that decision. Each student gets a different person.

I assign my low readers a person that is easy to understand and for whom I have enough information. Although most students choose a president, the presidents are the hardest to gather information and report about. The inventors tend to be the easiest.

I also factor in gender. I want my girls to feel empowered by the person that they are reading about and know that they too can do great things. So, I tend to assign girl heroes to girls and boy heroes to boys.

Each folder has the articles and books from above as well as a recording sheet and a sheet with QR Codes on it. QR Codeas well. What I love about the QR Codes is that even my lowest readers can watch the videos and write down facts that they learn. During this time, students spend about a week, researching their individual person. Students read the books and articles and use their iPads to watch the videos and look at the websites.

I have provided all the resources. In the past, so much time was wasted finding the resource instead of reading and researching.

It finally occurred to me that my objective was to have students read and research, not locate resources, so I took that step out of the process. I have students fill out a graphic organizer while researching that includes basic questions and prompts. Most students are able to find enough information to fill out the graphic organizer.Graphic Organizers for Education.
